McMurdo Station, Antarctica

The post office at McMurdo Station, Ross Island, Antarctica in 1975. Photo sent in by Billy-Ace Baker.

Billy-Ace tells that the building shown is Number 2 that was right next door to Building Number 1. In 1975 Building 1 was the Club Erebus. When Billy-Ace wintered in 1963, Building 1 was the Administration building. In 1967 it was converted into an enlisted mens club. Billy-Ace cannot remember what Building 2 was used for in 1963, but it was NOT the post office during that year. During Deep Freeze '67, Building Number 2 was also used as Post Office building and the winter Post Master during that year was YN1 A.C.Webb. The gentleman in front of the PO in the 1975 picture is the winter Post Master YN1 Tom Schlesinger.

The post office at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in 1961. Photo sent in by Billy-Ace Baker.

The caption of the photo reads: "South Pole Station, Officer in Charge, Doctor, and Postmaster of the world's southernmost outpost, dispensary, and post office. This photo is from Our World In Antarctica, by LTJG Denis Clift, USN. The book, which was published in 1962, was used as a Navy cruise book for several years thereafter. The person in the photo is not identified, but it looks like it might be LT P.K.Swartz, Medical Corps who was the OIC during DF-61. Note the Postage Rates, Fees & Regulations taped on the bulkhead."

Shown here is list member Dr.Fred Goldberg of Sweden and Marambio Postmaster Quiroga at the post office of the Argentine Antarctic base Marambio (Seymour Island. 64º14'S 56º37'W). The Marambio Post Office is just a small office room with a desk and a bookcase. In a wooden box in the bookcase about 15-20 cachets and two older cancels are kept. The stamps are kept in a briefcase of the postmaster. Mail is flown out approx. once a month all year. Photo courtesy Fred Goldberg, taken March 2001.
Marambio Base, Antarctica

Dr.Fred Goldberg was a member of the Nordenskjöld History Expedition to Snow Hill Island (a 10-minute helicopter flight from Seymour Island) which took place in February/March 2001. The expedition examined the condition of the 1902 hut of Nordenskjöld on Snow Hill Island and the extensive restoration work that that has been done over the last 15 years. Nordenskjöld spent two years in the 6.3 by 4 meters hut together with 5 other expedition members before finally being rescued in 1903 by the Argentinian ship A.R.A. Uruguay.

During the expedition Dr. Goldberg serviced about 100 pieces of philatelic mail which all received the expedition's cachet, were signed by the expedition team members, and got postmarked at Marambio.

Scott Base, Antarctica

The Post Office at New Zealand's Scott Base (Ross Island. 77º51'S 166º46'E) as in existence in 1970. The Scott Post Office closed on October 1, 1987. Between 1987 and 1994 New Zealand Post did not offer any postal facilities to the base at all. After this period all mail from Scott Base is handled at the Ross Dependency Agency in Christchurch.

Interestingly, this photo was found on a breakfast cereal card. The card is called "No 23 Post Office, Scott Base" and is part of a set called Antarctic Adventure. The set, consisting of a series of 30 cards, was issued in 1972 by Sanitarium Health Food Company. Scan provided by Steven McLachlan.
King Edward Point, South Georgia

Early 90s shot of the post office at King Edward Point, South Georgia. Photo from the book Naar Koude Kusten (1994) by Eerde Beulakker.

Polar Philatelists and official sources report that the old King Edward Point PO shown here and below was demolished in Nov.2000 to make way for the buildings of the new British Antarctic Survey Research Station. The new post office will be housed in the main building of the new BAS Station which is to be officially opened in March 2001.

Isla Redonda, Tierra del Fuego

Dec. '99 shot from Glen Stephens showing the post office on Isla Redonda in the Beagle Channel, in the Tierra del Fuego National Park in Argentina. Isla Redonda is totally uninhabited and the post office opens only a few days a week for a few hours to service the mail from a nearby small Argentine coast guard station. Apart from the ones in Antarctica, this is one of the most southern post offices on Earth. Isla Redonda is in fact located on a more southerly latitude than for instance sub-antarctic South Georgia or Macquarie Isl.

It was actually there, and I was given a quick tour of the small room where all the mail from Scott Base is cancelled."
