Task Force 43 Deep Freeze 1960 Cruise Book

DF60a. McMurdo, Antarctica

TERMC P.A. Remillard and Constructionman J.F. Boudreau, cancelling mail in the McMurdo Post Office. TERMC was the Navy rating abbreviation for Chief Teleman/Radioman. During the early 60s the Navy did away with the Teleman (TE) rating and established the Postal Clerk (PC) rating. Most of the senior Teleman, such as Chief Remmillard, would eventually convert to Radioman and the TE would be dropped from the rating abbreviation. Once the conversion was complete these personnel would no longer be responsible for processing U.S. Mail.

Mail Call probably at the original Byrd Station. Mail Call was the most important morale factor in Antarctica. Getting a HAM Radio phone patch home was the second most.

Mail from home is hauled to the Administration Office for sorting by ADJ3 John D.Sullivan, RM1 C.Smith, AM1 William W.Chastain, and AKAN James E.Hollenbeck. This is most likely the VX-6 (Air Development Squadron Six) Admin Office at McMurdo.

Ardo X Mayer, a geomagnetician and a member of the Deep Freeze 61 USARP overland traverse from McMurdo to the South Pole Station grabs his mail and a cup of coffee upon arriving at the Pole. The traverse covered 1,450 miles and was on the trail for 64 days.

DF67a. Williams Field, Antarctica

PC3 John M. Loft lugs the mail at Williams Field. The postal clerks were among the most popular people on the ice when mail was due. The building shown (Air Terminal 2) is a Jamesway Hut at Williams Field, an airfield on the Ross Ice Shelf serving McMurdo Station.

Sorting of the mail is the last step before the "rush" on the post office. Here PC2 Robert Baker and PCSN Carlton Ferguson get the job done quickly and efficiently. This photo is probably taken inside Building 2 at McMurdo Station (see also the 1975 picture in the South Polar Regions section).
